About Dr Jo-Lyn McKenzie
MBBS FRACS
Ear, Nose & Throat, Head & Neck Surgeon
Dr Jo-Lyn McKenzie is an award-winning paediatric and adult Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon.
Dr McKenzie specialises in paediatric disorders and rhinology (conditions of the nose), including rhinoplasty and thyroid surgery.
Dr McKenzie is passionate about ENT medicine because it allows her to care for people across their whole lifespan, from their first days until old age. She enjoys the meticulous nature of ENT surgery, which requires fine work in microscopic spaces. Dr McKenzie gains great satisfaction from helping her patients restore their quality of life through ENT procedures that improve sleep, breathing, or hearing. Above all she loves achieving surgical cure of thyroid and other head and neck tumours for her patients.
Dr McKenzie is also a mother of young children. She, her daughter and her son have all undergone ENT procedures, so she has first-hand experience of being a patient and the parent of a patient. This has re-affirmed her commitment to patient-centred care, and the importance of guiding patients through their diagnosis and treatment options. When you see Dr McKenzie, you can be confident you are in the hands of a surgeon who is capable, caring and committed.
Dr McKenzie was born and raised in northern Queensland, and completed her undergraduate degree at James Cook University in Townsville. She studied medicine at The University of Melbourne, where she won prizes for being a top surgical and clinical student, and was named on the Dean’s Honour List. Choosing to return to her home state of Queensland, Dr McKenzie was accepted into highly-competitive ENT training the first year she was eligible, well in advance of the seven-year average. During her training she won the Frank Szallasi Research Prize.
To ensure she stays up to date with the most cutting-edge techniques to get the best outcome for children and families, Dr McKenzie has undergone further subspeciality training in head and neck otolaryngology and is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology (ANZSPO). She is also a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ASOHNS).
Established as a field leader in surgery and research, Dr McKenzie has published medical research papers and contributed to international textbooks on ENT surgery. She is an investigator on clinical trials for hearing preservation during chemotherapy, and the use of stents for sinus medication delivery.
Dr McKenzie consults privately at locations across Brisbane including Wynnum, North Lakes, Tarragindi, Capalaba and Albion, and operates at Brisbane Private, Herston Private, Greenslopes Private for adults and children, and Mater Children’s Private Hospitals for children only. She is appointed as a surgeon at the Queensland Children’s Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). Dr McKenzie is a passionate mentor of the next generation of surgeons, serving as Director of Training for ENT Surgery at RBWH and Lecturer in Medicine and Surgery at The University of Queensland.
